The Leiden hofjes are not all too easy to find. Most hofjes are only accessible through gateways and doors, which are found even in busy shopping streets. Once you open such a door, you will be amazed of the haven of peace that you will encounter. Not only the peace, but also the characteristic historical architecture will suprise anyone in a pleasant way.

The houses in the hofjes used to be for the poor. Rich people founded these houses and hoped to receive some salvation in return. Of course this increased their chances for a place in heaven.
